Three-manifolds and Dedekind sums

Abstract
Dedekind sums are arithmetic functions which arose in the study of
modular holomorphic functions.
I shall explain in this expository talk how they are related to
numerical invariants of 3-manifolds
and give conditions on the realisation of a 3-manifold by Dehn surgery
on a knot in the 3-sphere.
