Abstract

In the 1920's, Weyl proved a formula for the characters of the irreducible representations of reductive groups (e.g., the general linear group) over the complex numbers. In 1979, George Lusztig announced a conjectural character formula for representations of reductive groups over fields of positive characteristic. I will briefly discuss a history of the problem and explain the role of geometric objects called parity sheaves in recent advances.
