Ribbon Graph Constructions with Applications to Link Invariants

Abstract
An introduction to ribbon graphs (graphs together with a surface
embedding) and their application in the structure of link diagrams. We
will highlight constructions in the diagrammatic approach to links: tangle
insertions, mutations, parallels, and periodic links can be studied from
the perspective of on ribbon graphs. Associated formulae for the rank
polynomials are developed & the corresponding properties given for link
invariants.
