Abstract

It is amazing that even very complicated molecules like proteins have a crystalline solid phase. A satisfactory theoretical understanding of why periodic pattern are ubiquitous, and which patterns are selected, is not yet available. I will give examples where periodicity is expected to emerge as a consequence from energy minimization and discuss recent rigorous mathematical results for simplified mathematical models.
