Applications of geometric mechanics: rigid bodies, fluids, liquid crystals, KdV, Teichmüller geodesics

Prof Tudor Ratiu (EPFL)

Monday 3rd December, 2012 14:00-15:00 Maths 515

Reduction of Hamiltonian and Lagrangian systems whose configuration space is a Lie group will be presented. Then it will be shown how this simple theory applied to the study of the dynamics of various systems, some very applied such as liquid crystal theory, others very pure such as geodesics of the Weil-Petersson metric on the universal Teichmüller space.
