Let R be a commutative ring spectrum. Given a map f from X to BGL_1R one can construct the R-module Thom spectrum of f, Th(f), generalising the classical notion of the Thom spectrum of a spherical fibration in the case R=S^0. The Thom spectrum functor is symmetric monoidal making it very useful in the analysis of ring structures in the category of R-modules.
