What is an Integrable System?

Abstract

This is a notoriously difficult question to answer. By giving examples from classical mechanics I will motivate one possible answer: Liouville’s theorem on integrable systems. Time permitting I will mention how integrable partial differential equations arise in modern theories of mathematical physics.
