Abstract

I will discuss some questions regarding concordance of links to special (classes of) links, in particular to the Hopf link and to split links. The first case is motivated by a question of J.Davis who showed that a two-component link with multivariable Alexander polynomial equal to one is topologically concordant to the Hopf link. In the talk I will show many such links (with unknotted components) are not smoothly concordant to the Hopf link. I will also describe a special class of links that are split topologically but not smoothly and discuss some conjectures regarding such links. This is joint work with D.Ruberman.
