Abstract

The aim of this talk is to survey some of my research work on inverse semigroups over the past few years. I shall use this to illustrate how they occur in a surprisingly diverse range of topics including self-similar group actions, topos theory, C^{\ast}-algebras and the theory of wavelets. My thesis is that this provides evidence for their unifying role in describing aspects of symmetry that are not accessible to group theory. I shall not assume any specific background knowledge of semigroup theory.
