Manifolds, quadratic forms and bagels

Abstract

The Poincare duality properties of manifolds give rise to quadratic structures in the homology, and hence also to various numerical invariants such as the integer-valued signature. In the last 40 years index theory has led to the development of real-valued invariants, which have not yet been fully internalized by topologists. The talk will outline some recent progress, including an application of the Maslov index to the art of slicing a bagel.
