Abstract

Halphen pencil is a one-dimensional linear system whose general element is an irreducible subvariety that is birational to a smooth variety of Kodaira dimension zero. Study of such pencils on rational and nearly rational algebraic varieties was started by the Italian school of algebraic geometry (e.g. Bertini, Halphen and etc. for P^2). In my talk I'll speak about complete description of Halphen pencils on smooth projective quartic threefolds.
