I will explain how the group theoretical notion of amenability can be adjusted to fit into the more general framework of quantum groups, and show how this allows one to obtain purely ring theoretic information about the associated Hopf algebras. Along the way, I will elaborate on the notion of a quantum group to make the talk accessible to people without pre-knowledge of quantum group theory.
