Painlev\'e equations and families of irregular connections.

Abstract
It has been known for a long time that the famous six equations of Painlev\'e are related to isomonodromic families of linear differential equations. We present here some of the history and recent work, joint with Masa-Hiko Saito, on families of connections with irregular singularities.
