Abstract

[Joint work with Tony Bahri and Matthias Franz] The integral cohomology ring of weighted projective space was computed by Kawasaki in 1973, and has a chaotic feel. Until recently, these spaces were then ignored by topologists. We bring a modest degree of order to Kawasaki's results by interpreting them in terms of the piecewise polynomials of finite element analysis, and the Thom complexes and localisation procedures of homotopy theory. I shall attempt to make this talk accessible to a broad mathematical audience.
