Abstract

Monoidal 2-categories model are not esoteric but rather model common three-dimensional structures and I will give several examples from algebra, geometry and topology. I will show how there are two ways to take the 'trace' of an endomorphism in such a structure, how they are related and how, from this, you recover things like braid closure, the distance moved by points in a metric space self-map and the Hochschild cohomology and cohomology of varieties or bimodules.
