Călugăreanu's Theorem and the topology of DNA

Abstract
In the late 1950s Georges Călugăreanu proved a theorem relating the linking number of a ribbon in 3-dimensional space with its writhe and twist. In this talk I will give a (very brief) overview of Călugăreanu's Theorem, and will show how it has been used to study the structure of DNA molecules.
