The Institute hosted two live shows at the 2021 Pint of Science public engagement festival, with over 70 live viewers attending each event.

Pint of Science is a worldwide science festival that brings researchers to your local pub/cafe space to share their scientific discoveries with you.

During 17-20 May, PoS broadcasted nearly 70 live online shows from over 30 cities across the UK, including those organised by iii's Alan Hayes and Robin Bartolini ably supported by the following cast:

  • Producer: Paul Hayes
  • YouTube Moderator: Dr Laura McCaughey
  • Master of Comments: Robin Bartolini
  • Host: George Finney

The first night, titled Hijacking the immune system: for better or for worse, was focused on the immune system.

Alan Hayes kicked things off by speaking about improving cell trafficking for cancer before Dr Marieke Pingen explained how viral infections and mosquitoes impact disease.

The show attracted lots of audience interaction, with plenty of questions posed to both Marieke and Alan.

The show has now received over 250 views on YouTube and can be viewed in the video, embedded below.

The second evening, titled What plagues the mind: Infections and Malfunctions, focused upon issues that can occur within the mind or nervous system.

Lorna Hayden got things started by speaking about MS and how they have found ways the body can protect the brain against viruses. Miriam Scarpa followed by discussing ways to help prevent dementia.

As with the night one, audience interactions was excellent, with a number of thoughtful questions put to both Lorna and Miriam.

The show has now received over 220 views on YouTube and can be viewed in the video, embedded below.

Organiser Alan Hayes said: "Both events went very well and I would like to thank everyone who took part.

"In particular, I'd like to thank the back-stage staff - Paul, Laura and Robin - for making sure the shows ran smoothly and to George who was a fantastic host, keeping the show rolling between speakers and helping to get the audience involved.

"The speakers all did a fantastic job and kept the audience engaged thought each evening and handled all the questions very well."
