A group of 15 members of the Sii community pose together indoors in front of a “Microbiology Society” banner. They are arranged in two rows, smiling at the camera, wearing casual-smart clothing and conference lanyards with name badges. The setting is a modern venue with decorative circular green wall panels behind them.

On Monday, 13 April 2026, an 18-strong contingent of School of Infection & Immunity staff and students attended the Microbiology Society Annual Conference 2026.

The Conference took place over four days at the ICC Belfast and consisted of scientific symposia, workshops, fora, professional development sessions, prize lectures, and hot topics.

The Sii team, which ranged from placement students to Principal Investigators from Bacteriology, made their presence known by sharing their science through eight posters and five oral presentations.

Lecturer in Bacteriology Dr Justine Rudkin, who shared images from the event on Bluesky, said: “For some, it was their first conference experience, whilst others were busy leading the Microbiome Forum and Career Development session for ECRs.

“I think it is fair to say, the bacteriologists are well into their exponential phase.”
