Biography

I am an aeronautical engineer and lecturer in Aerospace Engineering in the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. Before my current appointment, I was a research fellow in the Rolls‑Royce University Technology Centre and Centres for Aeronautics and Propulsion and Thermal Power Engineering at Cranfield University.

My main academic and professional interests revolve around the conceptual design of sustainable civil transport aircraft and related systems. During my career thus far, I have worked closely with major UK and European aerospace companies to identify and advance holistic, system-level solutions to the biggest technical impediments facing the commercial aviation industry today. More information on my work is provided under the 'Research Interests' section below.

I have a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Cranfield University, an MS in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology (where I was Fulbright scholar), and a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pretoria. I also have several years of experience in industry, working in aerodynamics and flight control.

Research interests

Although highly interdisciplinary, my research is unified under three themes:

  • Conceptual aircraft design
  • Development, analysis, and optimisation of airframe and propulsion systems
  • Technical and economic assessment of novel efficiency-enhancing technologies and subsystems at aircraft level.

The overarching goal is to significantly advance and accelerate the development of sustainable aerospace solutions. I employ both deterministic and non‑deterministic design methods, as well as physics‑based muti-domain systems modelling techniques. A unique characteristic of my work is the development of methods to aid aircraft manufacturers in identifying aircraft family designs that would be ‘evolvable’ far beyond the initial entry-into-service date. The platform applications of my research cover traditional civil transport aircraft, as well as electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft.
