Dr Mohammad Fotouhi

Research interests

I am a Lecturer in Materials and Structures, and member of the James Watt School of Engineering.

I joined the University of Glasgow as a lecturer in September 2019 and my expertise lies in composites design, manufacturing and integrity. I am currently working on generative design, lightweight/smart bio-inspired composites, 4D printed self-morphing structures and multi-functional materials. I have made innovations in designing and manufacturing of high-performance composite T-joints, Pseudo-ductile and notch insensitive composites, and novel damage detection methods.

Before joining Glasgow, I was as a lecturer at the University of the West of England and previously led the Hybrid Composites developments in the HiPerDuCT programme (EP/I02946X/1, £6.41m), as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol. I also have 3 years of industrial experience in R&D activities including reverse engineering, manufacturing, CAD/CAM and material analysis.

I graduated with honoured MSc (Sep 2011) and PhD (Dec 2015) degrees in mechanical engineering (manufacturing and production), both my MSc and PhD theses were on acoustic emission-based damage monitoring of composites, and were singled out for their quality in a University-wide assessment. I am in editorial board of international journals: Composite Materials, Science publishing group, and Journal of engineering and technology.
