Kwok-ho (Koko) LAM is a Reader (Ultrasonics) in James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow and an Adjunct Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (HKPolyU). He received the M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Physics from HKPolyU. After working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at HKPolyU, he became a Research Associate at the NIH Resource Center on Medical Ultrasonic Transducer Technology in the Department of Biomedical Engineering of University of Southern California. He started his academic career as an Assistant Professor (2013) and later an Associate Professor and Associate Head of Department (2019) in Electrical Engineering at HKPolyU.

 

His research focuses on materials for energy conversion and storage, ultrasound transducer technology for biomedical and non-destructive evaluation applications, and multimodal imaging technology. He has achieved 220+ publications, including 7 granted patents for 6 inventions, 190+ SCI journal papers, and 20 international conference papers. He was listed among the top 2% scientists in a global list released by Stanford University in 2021 and 2022. He was a recipient of the Early Career Award presented by Research Grants Council of Hong Kong in 2014. He has also been a Visiting Professor in South China Normal University since 2015.

 

Koko is a Senior Member of the IEEE Society, a member of American Chemical Society, an Exco member of Ultrasound Transducers and Materials Society, China Association of Medical Equipment - Medical Ultrasound Equipment Society, and a Secretary of IEEE Hong Kong Joint Chapter of PES/IAS/PELS/IES (IEEE JC PIPI). He is an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Smart Materials and has served on the editorial board of SCI journals including Coating, Sensors, and Micromachines. He has also served as a Reviewer for grant proposals for Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, Dutch Research Council (NWO) and FONDECYT of Chile, a Member of local/overseas examination boards, an Organizing Committee Member of international conferences & seminars, and a Reviewer for over 70 prestigious international SCI journals.

Research interests

My group is working on energy-related materials and engineering applications, operating across the Centre for Medical and Industrial Ultrasonics (C-MIU) and FUSE CDT. Our work covers research topics from materials science, devices technology, to systems.

Our research topics are interdisciplinary, so candidates with undergraduate (or higher level) major in materials science, electrical engineering, and biomedical engineering are welcomed.
