Biography

My research focuses on making a leap from automation to autonomy, with the target of 'automating the world'. I am interested in exploring the frontiers in control engineering, embodied AI, causal learning, autonomous vehicles, robotics and digital twins. I have been awarded a Turing Fellow in 2024, a Royal Society-Newton Advanced Fellow in 2020, and an EPSRC Innovation Fellow in 2018. Research interests

Professor Zhao’s research spans multiple areas of robotics and autonomous systems, including perception, decision making, modelling, control, reasoning, learning, computing, and digital twinning. He is passionate in investigating fundamental theories and developing tools to deliver safe, trustworthy and efficient autonomous systems. In applications, he aims to tackle the challenges raised in connected and autonomous vehicles, robotics, and embodied intelligence.
