Project Description
The School of Engineering of the University of Glasgow is seeking a highly motivated Early Stage Researcher to undertake an exciting 3/3.5-year Marie Curie PhD project entitled ‘Chemical and physical sensors on flexible/conformable substrates’ within the Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering Division, for up to 3.5 years.
This project will develop strain gauge pressure sensors on suitable flexible /stretchable and conformable substrates. The structures will be realized using metal interconnects and organic like conductors e.g. CNT dispersed and deposited on plastic substrates using non-conventional techniques. The developed technology will be extended to obtain graphene based chemical sensors, in particular pH sensors, on flexible/conformable plastic substrates, adaptable to human body for e.g. the monitoring of sweat rate. Candidates with multidisciplinary interests are encouraged to apply. In particular, electronics, materials, chemistry and physics are relevant. This project is part of European Commission funded Initial Training Network on electronic skin and applications - CONTEST (COllaborative Network for Training in Electronic Skin Technology). The candidate will have an exciting opportunity to work at leading institutes in the UK and Italy. The candidates will enroll for PhD at the University of Glasgow and carry out research both at the University of Glasgow, UK and Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Trento, Italy. For wider scientific exposure, the researcher will also have research stages at other networks sites (For details, see project website – www.contest-itn.eu). Women and other minorities in engineering are particularly encouraged to apply.
Funding
This position is supplied with an attractive salary (approx. €40,000 per annum gross) plus mobility allowance (€600-1000 per month, depending on family status) typical of Marie Curie Fellowships. After completion of CONTEST project (i.e. after Sept 2016) the student will be supported by the School, and it will cover home tuition fees and provide a stipend of £13,726 per annum for up to one year.
At the time of recruitment, the candidates for the positions as early-stage researchers (PhD students) must have obtained the Masters’ Degree or equivalent not more than 4 years ago.
It should be noted that other terms may also apply.
How to apply
Application for this scholarship is made by using the online system at the following link for admission as a postgraduate research student to the admission team in the Recruitment and International Office:
