Teacher Education (TEd)
Who We Are
The Teacher Education Research & Teaching Group (TEd RTG) brings together researchers, teacher educators, and postgraduate researchers working across teacher education, professional learning, and educational systems. Based within the School of Education at the University of Glasgow, TEd RTG is characterised by interdisciplinary, research-informed engagement with the theory, practice, and leadership of teacher education.
Our work spans initial teacher education, early career development, continuing professional learning, and doctoral research. We collaborate closely with schools, local authorities, national agencies, professional bodies, and international partners to address contemporary challenges in education and to shape future-focused, socially just teaching professions.
Areas of Intellectual Activity
TEd RTG intellectual activity is characterised by interdisciplinary, research-informed engagement with professional formation, curriculum and pedagogy, digital and sustainability futures, equity and wellbeing, and system-level partnership and policy leadership.
Our core areas of intellectual activity include:
1. Teacher Formation, Identity, and Professional Learning
Research into how teachers develop professional identities across career phases, including initial preparation, induction, mentoring, and continuing professional learning.
2. Pedagogies of Teacher Education
Innovative and critical approaches to how teachers are educated, including practice-based learning, reflective pedagogies, and research-informed teaching.
3. Curriculum, Assessment, and Standards in Teacher Education
Design, enactment, and evaluation of curricula and assessment frameworks within teacher education, including professional standards and accountability.
4. Subject-Specific and (Cross-)Disciplinary Teacher Education
Disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches to preparing teachers across curriculum areas and educational sectors.
5. Digital, AI, and Innovative Technologies in Education
The role of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and emerging innovations in teacher education, professional learning, and educational practice.
6. Equity, Wellbeing, and Social Justice in Teacher Education
Critical engagement with inclusion, equity, diversity, wellbeing, and social justice in teacher education policy, practice, and research.
7. Partnerships, Collaboration, and Professional Networks
School–university partnerships, professional learning communities, collaborative inquiry, and networked approaches to teacher education.
8. Policy, Systems, and Governance of Teacher Education
National and international policy, system-level reform, governance structures, and leadership in teacher education.
9. Research, Innovation, and Knowledge Mobilisation in Teacher Education
Methodological innovation, practitioner research, impact, and the mobilisation of knowledge across research, policy, and practice.
10. Place-Based, Environmental, and Sustainability Education
Education grounded in place, environment, climate justice, and sustainability, including rural, outdoor, and community-based approaches.

TEd RTG staff contribute to and lead a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across the whole School of Education and also within the core areas of teacher education and professional practice.

Eilidh and Lindsay presented on work they have been doing around Mattering. They presented their thinking behind changes made around induction, how discussions across the university influenced their thinking and shared their next steps.
