Research interests

Research Theme: Cardiovascular Data Science

I currently hold a lectureship that is externally funded by the British Heart Foundation. I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate training in Genetics at the University of Glasgow and received post-doctoral research training in various laboratories before joining Professor Dominiczak’s group. My principle research interests include identification of genetic determinants underlying complex disease, including hypertension and stroke, in experimental genetics and medicine. I have established microarray gene expression profiling on both the Affymetrix and Illumina platforms, microRNA profiling and have generated some high through put proteomics data with collaborators in the Sir Henry Wellcome Functional Genomics Facility, University of Glasgow. As well as an interest in identifying disrupted biological pathways from this data I have a major interest to integrate all three levels of biological information. Through external collaborations I work closely with bioinformaticians in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Imperial College, London and have particularly strong links with Ensembl.

Through the Euratools consortium, I was invited to present at a key note lecture at the Cardiovascular Genetics workshop at the European Council for Cardiovascular Research meeting (12th-14th October 2007, La Colle sur Loup, Nice, France). Through my interest in biological pathways and transcriptional networks I was invited to present at the Ingenuity Pathway Analysis User meeting (Basle Switzerland, 2007). In addition, I am a member of the British Hypertension Society and have chaired sessions at the International Society of Hypertension Fukuoka, Japan (2006) and various other local meetings.
