The University of Glasgow Sustainability Challenge is now open!

A sustainability challenge set by Glasgow City Council and Mott MacDonald for undergraduate students from the University of Glasgow.
Offered in partnership with Glasgow City Council and Mott MacDonald, the Challenge is a great chance to:
- Get involved in industry projects
- Enhance your environmental awareness
- Develop your communication and teamworking skills!
In teams, you’ll tackle one of two questions:
Question 1
Address the Scope 3 emissions challenge for Glasgow City Council, including identifying:
- which methodology and emission factors to use;
- where to find data and overcome challenges in data availability and quality;
- best practices at the international level and benchmarking for cities.
Question 2
Examine how the concept of time and Whole Life Value applies to carbon reporting in cities, specifically:
- how does the impact of 1 tonne of carbon emitted now compare with 1 tonne emitted in future years, both generally and in the context of the built environment?;
- can cities learn anything from financial reporting principles - e.g. could accrualaccounting (amortisation/depreciation) or NET Present Value (NPV) concepts beapplicable to carbon reporting in the built environment?
After submitting your answer as a two page proposal, 10 finalists will be selected to present their findings to a panel of academics and business leaders. The winning team will receive £200 vouchers as well as the chance to work with Glasgow City Council and Mott MacDonald to bring your ideas to life.
The deadline for applications is 17th November 2023, with proposal submissions due 12th January 2024 and the final presentations in February 2024.
