BEHAVIOURAL ECOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGICAL ECOLOGY AND LIFE-HISTORY STRATEGIES
I am interested in the relationships between individual differences in behaviour or physiology and subsequent life-history patterns, and have investigated these mainly using experimental studies of fish populations. For instance, we found that small differences in the dominance status and competitive ability of very young salmon can have major consequences: more dominant fish grow faster, and are therefore likely to metamorphose and complete the life-cycle a year ahead of subordinate siblings. This is related to their physiology: we have shown that dominance in fry is linked to standard metabolic rate, and have been investigating this further by looking at the causes and consequences of variation in metabolic rate.
We have been examining how variation in metabolic rate arises, how stable it is within individuals, and what are the costs and benefits of a high or low standard metabolic rate under different ecological conditions. The initial phase of this work, partly funded by a first European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant, explored how variation in metabolic phenotypes is maintained as a result of context-dependent selection. The work focussed on brown trout and Atlantic salmon, and employed experimental manipulations at every level from cells to populations. It involved collaborations with Colin Selman (in the component of the work examining variation in mitochondrial respiration), Richard Hartley (in measurements of ROS production in vivo), and Ian McCarthy and Simon Lamarre (Bangor University and University of Moncton, Canada, in work on protein synthesis). This approach is now continuing in a second ERC Advanced Grant that is focussing more on how mitochondrial function is related to the whole organism. In particular we are examining how the efficiency with which mitochondria produce ATP influences both organismal performance and the rate of ROS production, with consequences for ageing. This project is using minnows and sticklebacks as experimental species in addition to trout and salmon. We are also testing how mitochondrial function influences among-individual variation in the ability of fish to tolerate warm temperatures, and how this is traded off against telomere attrition, levels of oxidative damage and rates of senescence, in collaboration with Pat Monaghan who has a related research group examining telomere dynamics.
Fieldwork on the Conon River system has explored how selection on particular metabolic rates is influenced by nutrient levels, manipulated by varying the number of adult salmon carcasses present in spawning streams. This work has led to an interest in how freshwater communities in oligotrophic streams are influenced by the nutrient deposition from spawning salmon, with the possibility for conservation interventions to boost salmon populations through the artificial fertilization of these streams. The research has been conducted in collaboration with John Armstrong (Marine Scotland) and the Cromarty Firth Fisheries Board.
Our work is carried out with fish in laboratory, natural or semi-natural conditions (e.g. using stream tanks such as at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment - these allow us to observe the territorial behaviour of fish in a natural environment over which we have complete control, since we can alter water velocity and depth, food supply, fish density, bottom topography etc). Our work on wild fish is mostly based on the Conon River catchment, in collaboration with the Cromarty Firth Fishery Board. We also use the extensive fish-holding facilities in the Graham Kerr Building on campus.
I also retain an interest in research on life histories in birds, and will be involved in a new project (funded by an ERC Advanced Grant to Pat Monaghan) investigating how maternal age in zebra finches influences offspring viability.
