Biography

I am interested in how we can create equitable and sustainable solutions for the flourishing of people, animals and the environment in our planet. I approach this work via three intersecting areas: 1) One Health; 2) Complex Interventions; and 3) Co-production.

My research brings the methodology of complex interventions to bear on the challenges of One Health, working from the premise that problems spanning human, animal and environmental health are complex — they emerge from many interacting parts and depend on the behaviour and buy-in of a wide range of interest-holders. Rather than asking only whether an intervention works, I ask for whom it works, under what conditions, and how. Central to this is co-production: I design and evaluate programmes in partnership with the communities living with a problem, treating them as partners in understanding it rather than as subjects to be studied. Through participatory and developmental methods, I try to ensure that One Health interventions are not only effective but reach the people and places too often left behind.

My current research focuses on:

1) Designing, evaluating and implementing One Health complex interventions (such as Integrated Bite Case Management (IBCM) and enabling policies, regulations, and ordinances for rabies control and for preventing dog-mediated human rabies deaths in rabies endemic countries.
2) Understanding and tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic ecosystems in Southeast Asia.
3) Developing and using evaluative (such as Evaluability Assessment) and soft systems mapping tools (such as Rich Pictures Mapping, Process Mapping and Theories of Change) in co-producing interventions with interest-holders.

My work has been funded by UKRI MRC, NIHR & NERC, Wellcome Trust and British Academy.

I co-founded and co-direct the Glasgow Collaborative for Complex Interventions (GCC) and serve as an associate editor for the journal Pilot and Feasibility Studies.

I was the Founding Director of Good Evaluation, a social venture supported by Aspect (A SHAPE Platform for Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Transformation). I was also a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute and hold a PhD in Political Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
