Biography

I am a veterinarian, graduating from the R(D)SVS in 2000 and gaining a PhD in 2007 in veterinary epidemiology from the University of Edinburgh. Since 2009 I have been director of the Scottish Marine Animal Stranding Scheme (SMASS) and led for the pathological investigation of around 1000 marine mammals. I'm interested in how we can utilise pathology data from individuals to best inform on population and ecosystem health. I am currently chair of the  International Whaling Commission's Expert panel for strandings and a member of ICES and ASCOBANS working groups on marine mammal ecology. In 2020 I was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship for work on developing marine strandings surveillance networks.
