CoSS PhD Scholarship – Exploring gendered mental health issues in One Health context with a pastoralist community in Ethiopia

CoSS PhD Scholarship – Exploring gendered mental health issues in One Health context with a pastoralist community in Ethiopia

Rapid social and technological changes have transformed the lives of many pastoralists, yet their health and food security remain highly dependent on the health of their livestock and the environment. Despite the vulnerability of pastoralist communities to the effects of climate change, little research has been conducted on their mental health, and how this is affected by changing environmental conditions. Socio-cultural norms mean that men and women experience life differently, reflected in the gendered ways in which mental health is experienced and understood.

This PhD adopts a One Health approach to address interdependencies across multiple Sustainable Development Goals, using social theory to explore the complex interplay between mental health, climate, gender, livestock and environmental change.

The study integrates methods and theory drawn from anthropology and animal health to nuance biomedical understandings of mental health which sideline the links between human and animal health and the environment. This innovative study has a substantial fieldwork component in Ethiopia (Year 2) and will explore: (i) the (gendered) mental health of people in a livestock-dependent community in the Awash Fentale Woreda (southern Afar region), Ethiopia; (ii) how this intersects with the health of their animals; and/or (iii) is influenced by changes in their social and physical environment.
