Short Description

Training and supervising staff is an important role of the laboratory manager. This course will provide students with an overview of key considerations when training personnel in the laboratory, including: the need for and value of training and keeping training records; strategies to enhance the learning of the trainee and for effective supervision; and developing an effective training strategy.

This course is comprised of online lectures and tutorials which will take place during semester 2.

Assessment

Written Assignment - critical evaluation of a training record (750 words) (ILO 1) (30%)

Oral Assessment and Presentation - training plan (ILO 2,3,4) (70%)

Course Aims

1. Familiarise students with the need for and value of training in the laboratory to stakeholders involved, and the importance of maintaining training records.

2. Provide students with an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of effective learning strategies and supervision practices.

3. Provide students with the opportunity to design a training strategy.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically appraise the need for maintaining training records and the value of training to the trainee and organisation.

2. Critically appraise effective learning and supervision strategies.

3. Identify and critically assess the learning needs of trainees.

4. Define and critically evaluate the goals and objectives of training.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
