Short Description

This course considers the importance of the finance function within organisations in connection with decision making, control and performance management.

Course Aims

The course aims to give students a broad perspective on accounting and finance and its importance in organisations together with an introduction to some of the practical skills involved in the interpretation and usage of financial information and reports.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Interpret financial statements, critically evaluate the ratio analysis of the financial statements.  

2. Utilize time value of money, apply investment appraisal methods, and be able to identify the limitations of capital investment appraisal techniques.

3. Contrast financial accounting and cost accounting, explain cost accounting related concepts, the role of budgeting in planning and controlling of the business, and apply cost accounting techniques.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
