Short Description

Students will undertake placement (20 days in total) in a care setting for individuals with complex needs (adults or children or both) to enable them to gain insight into effects of disability on affected individuals and on their family.

Timetable

20 days on placement.

Assessment

Students will submit a reflective portfolio of about 2,000 words that considers the overall care environment of the placement and discusses between two and four specific cases that provide insight into the current and future needs of individuals with complex needs and considers the wider effects on the families of those affected. Log of placement hours should be appended. (50%)

Each student will give a 15 minute presentation providing insights from their placement in relation to how individuals and their families are affected by complex needs. (50%)

Course Aims

This course will provide opportunity for students to gain insight into the care environment and on the effects of complex needs / disability on both affected individuals and their family.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Critically discuss the practical aspects of care provision to individuals with complex needs / disability

■ Critically reflect on the impact on families of an individual with complex needs / disability

■ Critically outline on the requirements of individuals with complex needs / disability, and on their longer term prospects (such as the transition from child care to adult care)

■ Critically reflect on the effects on the family when one (or more) individuals have complex needs / disability

■ Critically discuss how social care, education and health care interact

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
