Short Description

In the final phase of the programme participants will undertake a dissertation based on an issue identified in the previous course Professional Enquiry and Decision-Making which aims to inform and appropriately disseminate strategies for change/improvement in the selected setting.


Online teaching during semester 1. Supervision to support dissertation completion.

Course Aims

This course aims to

■ Conduct a supervised, ethical, research exercise that involves examining literature, gathering relevant data and analysis of findings in an educational context.

■ Enable participants to express a critical, thorough, and reflective analysis of the role of research in school improvement.

■ Critically review, consolidate and extend knowledge, skills and thinking in the discipline.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Students will be able to:

■ Identify, from a critical review of literature, and/or other appropriate context, an issue of strategic importance in the field of Educational Leadership.

■ Apply a range of investigative skills to gather and analyse research evidence, demonstrating ethical and professional practice.

■ Reflect critically upon the findings of the inquiry, draw valid conclusions, and make recommendations, identifying potential areas for further research.

■ Critically evaluate the methods of inquiry, the analysis strategy and the findings and identify limitations.

■ Present the dissertation adhering to appropriate academic conventions.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
