Research title: A Comparison of Passive Atmospheric CO2 Capture with Steel Slags in Mexico and the UK
The environmental concern about greenhouse gas levels, specifically atmospheric carbon dioxide, has highlighted the need to increase research on CO2 sequestration technology. Evidence from laboratory experiments indicates an influence from external factors (humidity, atmospheric pressure, temperature variation) in the passive carbonation of steel slag, providing a knowledge gap to investigate the contrasting meteorological circumstances that impact the passive slag carbonation process on legacy steel slag heaps from Mexico and the United Kingdom. This will enable the determination of the volume of passive carbon dioxide sequestration by this natural reaction.
To evaluate the influence of the external factors overtime on the rates and volumes of carbon dioxide sequestration, my project uses Scanning Electron Microscope Imaging using Back-Scattered Electrons (SEM-BSE), Scanning Electron Microscopy / Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray Micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) to determine the rates and volumes of passive carbon dioxide sequestration with steel slag.
The project aims to set mineral carbonation with steel slag as a mitigation solution to decrease atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Determining the rates and volumes will give the underpinning scientific knowledge to guide governmental policy (in Mexico and the United Kingdom) about the use of mineral CO2 sequestration with industrial residues with a view to mitigating climate change impacts.
