Three of Glasgow’s leading professors have been elected Fellows to the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Three of Glasgow’s leading professors have been elected Fellows to the Academy of Medical Sciences.
The new Fellows are:
- Prof John McMurray, Professor of Cardiology, Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences,
- Prof Massimo Palmarini, Director of Centre for Virus Research, Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation,
- Prof Andrew Baker, BHF Professor of Translational Cardiovascular Sciences, Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences.
The Academy of Medical Sciences is the independent body in the UK that represents the diverse spectrum of medical science – from basic research through clinical application to healthcare delivery.
Academy Fellows are elected for excellence in medical research, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare. The expertise of the new Fellows includes addictions, anaesthesia, age-related diseases and animal biology.
Professor Anna Dominiczak, Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, said: “It is a huge honour for my colleagues to be elected to the AMS and recognises the immense contribution each of them has made to medicine and biomedical sciences. We are very proud and happy for them.”
There are around 1,121 ordinary fellows – all elected for excellence in medical research, for innovative application of scientific knowledge or for their conspicuous service to healthcare.
Professor Sir John Tooke PMedSci, President of the Academy of Medical Sciences said, “The Academy of Medical Sciences champions the excellence and diversity of medical science in the UK, and this is clearly demonstrated in this year’s cohort of new Fellows.
“Their broad range of expertise and fantastic achievements to date shows just how strong the Fellowship is – from the NHS knowledge of Sir Andrew Dillon to the policy experience of Professor Christl Donnelly. Their election is a much deserved honour, and I know they will contribute greatly to the Academy. I am delighted to welcome them all to the Fellowship, and look forward to working with them in the future.”
The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony on Wednesday 1 July 2015.
