Dr Ian Sword, a benefactor to the University's Chemistry department, will give a lecture on how to succeed in the chemistry industry on Wednesday January 11 at 2pm in the Main Lecture Theatre of the Joseph Black Building.

Dr Ian Sword is a remarkable success story. He completed a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Glasgow and continued to post-doctorate level. He then made the swift decision to move into the commercial sector. He founded the Inveresk Research Group Incorporated, which has now merged with Charles River Laboratories to create a multimillion dollar international company with more than 8,000 employees in 50 countries. His talk on Wednesday January 11, entitled 'Cash from Chemistry - building a science based company in Scotland' will be of interest to everyone, including postgraduates and anyone interested in the chemical industry and how to succeed.

As a chemistry graduate of the University from 1964 Ian Sword honoured his alma mater in July of last year by funding the Ian Sword Lectureship in Organic Chemistry.

Against a backdrop of closures in English Chemistry departments, Dr Sword's generosity represents a significant contribution and vote of confidence in Chemistry in Scotland where the subject continues to thrive and develop.
