Sports at the University of Glasgow

Aeronautical Engineering student Ben shares what he thinks about sports at the University of Glasgow

One of my favourite parts of university life in Glasgow is the huge array of sports on offer to students.  With a huge number of different sports clubs and facilities, there really is something for everyone here in Glasgow

When talking about sports at Glasgow University, there is no better place to start than the Stevenson Building.  It’s the home of the Glasgow University Sports Association who organise all sporting related matters on campus, and it’s where the University gym facilities can be found.  The Stevenson Gym is a state of the art gym which spans two levels and has all of the equipment you can expect to find in a great gym.  There is also a 25m swimming pool, an indoor cycling studio, squash courts and gym halls where regular classes are held for all members.  Access to the gym is free for any first year student living in university halls of residence, or £149 per year for any other student at Glasgow University.

One of the best ways to get involved with sports at Glasgow University is to join a sports club.  The university has a club for almost any sport you can think of, and they all have options for players of any ability.  Sports such as football, rugby, tennis, hockey, netball, swimming and athletics all have multiple teams which compete all over the UK in the British Universities and Collage Sports Leagues (BUCS).  These are a great opportunity for students who thrive in a particular sport to compete with the best in the country, and meet lots of likeminded athletes.  For those who don’t wish to compete, there’s lots of opportunity for more social matchplay and training at all of Glasgow University’s sports clubs.

Sports clubs are a great way to make new friends at University, with all the clubs placing a massive emphasis on socialising and having fun.  Almost all of Glasgow Universities sports clubs host social events every Wednesday evening throughout term, which is the highlight of many student’s weeks.

The Garscube Sports Complex is home to even more facilities which are primarily used for training sessions by the Glasgow Universities sports clubs.  The complex features 6 grass pitches and 2 synthetic pitches as well as further gym facilities, a golf simulator and tennis courts all of which can also be hired by students.  While these facilities aren’t on the main campus area, the unviersity sports association owns a large number of busses which can be used by students to travel between the main campus and places such as the Garscube for training sessions and matches.

All of the Glasgow University sports clubs have a committee of members who are responsible for the running of the club and the welfare of its members.  The committees are elected by students at AGM’s hosted each year for each of the clubs.  Joining a committee is a great way for students to practice their leadership as well as being a great asset for a students CV.  These committee members are always contactable, for students who have any questions or concerns about joining a club, or for members of a club in need of support.

The full list of clubs on offer, as well as the contact details for each club’s committee can be found here - https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/sport/whatson/club/
