What are digital skills and why are they important?

Digital skills and digital literacies are a hugely important part of modern day learning and employment. In essence, these are skills that you have which relate to technology. Think things like phones, computers, software and other digital devices.

You might be reading this thinking 'well, of course. I know how to use all these things' or you might be reading this thinking 'I'm not very good with technology'.

We all come to the University of Glasgow with different skill levels and confidence for all sorts of things, and the last thing we want is for you to be worried about using technology during your time with us. We've identified key things we think you need to know to maximise your time with us, as well as preparing you for whatever you do after your time with us.

If you want a credential on your transcript and a pathway to follow, have a look at our Digital Skills course on Moodle. If you'd like to dip in and out of things, you can find resources to things below.

Microsoft Office 365

As a student at the University, you get access to MS Office 365 with your UofG log in details. You can download all the software and access the online in-browser apps from the IT services webpage

For Office 365, you are likely to be expected to use and understand the basics of:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • Outlook
  • Powerpoint
  • Teams

These are the most likely apps that you will need to use during your time with us. If you are a student in more specialised subject areas, you might need to know how to use more apps. This information will be made available to you in your course handbooks.

We also expect you to be able keep on top of your email and communications, so do make sure you check your email regularly for information about your courses and the wider University.

For more detailed information and training on these apps, have a look at SLD's Digital Skills Moodle course and/or our customised LinkedIn Learning Pathway.

Moodle - your virtual learning environment

Knowing how to use and navigate Moodle is one of the key skills we expect of you as a student. This is where you will find all your course information, as well as submitting most of your coursework and assessments.

To access Moodle, go to: www.moodle.gla.ac.uk and you will be prompted to log in with your University credentials.

Please note: the use of the Moodle app is not supported at the University of Glasgow. Our Moodle is designed to be accessed via a browser, either on a laptop or on a phone. For information on how to use Moodle best with a mobile device, have a look at the Moodle App webpage

For a detailed walkthrough of all the Moodle basics, we've created a comprehensive how-to guide that you can refer back to at any point that covers all the key information about Moodle:
