New funding service

In 2023, all research councils will transition from the Joint Electronic Submissions (Je-S) system to the Funding Service

This means that all applicants, grant holders, research support staff, reviewers and panel members must start using the new Funding Service, which is part of UKRI’s Simpler and Better Funding Programme, which is creating a single, consistent user-centred Funding Service.

UKRI has already made available information on how applicants will be able to use the new Funding Service and detailed timelines for transition for each council.

November 2023 update from EPSRC

As of November 2023, there will be no deadlines for submissions to EPSRC responsive mode opportunities. While a closing date (showing a date a year later) will appear on the TFS (Funding Service) due to system requirements, applicants need not wait to submit as EPSRC will be processing applications on an ongoing basis by batching them internally.

The responsive mode opportunities that will run on this model include:

  • standard research grant
  • new investigator award
  • overseas travel grant
  • network grant
  • discipline-hopping in information and communications technologies
  • working with overseas scientists

For an indication of timelines, EPSRC outline that applications submitted in late 2023 and early 2024 are likely to be considered at panels in September 2024.  Their responsive mode panel meetings on Engineering, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences are expected to run on a quarterly basis from September 2024. Panels held prior to this, during the spring and summer of 2024, will consider responsive mode applications that were submitted up to October 2023.

Details about the change of approach outlined above can be found on the EPSRC TFS transition page. UKRI also continues to create and update resources to help applicants, peer reviewers and research offices use the Funding Service.
