Rosetrees NEXT Award
Rosetrees aims to fund an exceptional researcher ready to deliver major, patient focused impact. As a unique private charity funding pioneering medical research, they back bold thinkers with high risk, high reward ideas. The NEXT Award is designed to propel one outstanding researcher toward a breakthrough in their chosen disease area.
Only one application is permitted per university/institution. The Strategic Research Initiatives team work with College Research Support Offices to coordinate the UofG selection process for this call.
Our Process
We begin the internal selection process as soon as we receive notification that a new call has launched. We aim to complete our selection process no more than one month before the funder deadline. We use a two-stage process in this process, with the outcome of stage 1 determining the nature of the stage 2 process:
Stage 1
There is no formal expression of interest required, and interested applicants must notify their College Research Support Office if they are considering an application.

Stage 2
If all potential applicants are from a single college, that college will manage the selection process. If potential candidates come from more than one college, the Strategic Research Initiatives team will manage the selection process.
The SRI selection process requires submission of a completed internal application form based on the funder’s template and a three-page CV. This CV should include the main applicant’s current role and source of funding, 5 recent publications, 5 additional relevant publications and active grants indicating their role as PI or CoI. Any publications that are particularly relevant to the current application should be highlighted in bold with a 1-2 line summary describing the relevance of the publication to the current application.
Use of AI in Application Development
Applications submitted to internal demand management and quality management processes at the University of Glasgow are expected to comply with the University of Glasgow's Generative AI Guidance for Researchers and the Funders joint statement: use of generative AI tools in funding applications and assessment.
All applicants should review these documents and are responsible for ensuring any application they submit complies with the guidance and parameters provided. Key points we would like to highlight from these resources include:
- Any use of generative AI tools must be accompanied by critical analysis and oversight on the part of the user
- Work that is not your own effort or is without appropriately transparent acknowledgement of sources or tools used (e.g. work submitted that is the product of Generative AI) does not meet crucial requirements for assessment or academic/research integrity
- Applicants must not use generative AI tools to generate an entire application, or sections of an application, without human involvement
- Reviewers must not input our confidential funding applications into generative AI tools to develop their reviews
