Philip Leverhulme Prize

For researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising - to use for any research purpose.

This scheme focusses on six different subject areas that rotate on a 3-year cycle. Each institution may not submit more than three nominations in any prize subject. The Strategic Research Initiatives team coordinates the demand management for this award in collaboration with college Research Support Teams.

Our Process

We use a two-stage process, with each stage being mandatory. This approach is designed to ensure a full selection process is implemented only if required based on interest.

Stage 1: Each college identifies interested applicants across the different subject areas.

Stage 2: If there are more than three interested applicants in a given subject area, an institutional selection process will be initiated. If all the interested applicants for a given subject are from the same college, that college will facilitate the selection process for that subject. If the candidate for a single subject areas are from more than one college, the Strategic Research Initiatives team will facilitate the selection process.

Timelines: We normally launch the college selection process in when the call is confirmed in January each year. Identification of interested applicants is normally completed by mid-March and UofG candidates for each subject confirmed by the end of March. This ensures the selected candidates have sufficient time (approximately two months) before the call deadline.

Use of AI in Application Development

Applications submitted to internal demand management and quality management processes at the University of Glasgow are expected to comply with the University of Glasgow's Generative AI Guidance for Researchers and the Funders joint statement: use of generative AI tools in funding applications and assessment

All applicants should review these documents and are responsible for ensuring any application they submit complies with the guidance and parameters provided. Key points we would like to highlight from these resources include:

  • Any use of generative AI tools must be accompanied by critical analysis and oversight on the part of the user
  • Work that is not your own effort or is without appropriately transparent acknowledgement of sources or tools used (e.g. work submitted that is the product of Generative AI) does not meet crucial requirements for assessment or academic/research integrity
  • Applicants must not use generative AI tools to generate an entire application, or sections of an application, without human involvement
  • Reviewers must not input our confidential funding applications into generative AI tools to develop their reviews
