The AXA Chair is a highly selective funding scheme for senior researchers intended to support significant transdisciplinary advancements in the development of a research area within a host institution that is in line with its long-term strategy. It aims at creating a full-time academic position in the host institution and fostering a step change in the career of the appointed AXA Professor. 

Each host institution may submit only one AXA Chair application per campaign as lead institution and the Strategic Research Initiatives team oversees the University of Glasgow selection process.

Our selection process takes place in two stages, one at the college level and another at the institutional level. All interested candidates, both internal and external, must contact the relevant College Research Support Team to indicate their interest in applying with the University of Glasgow. The College Research Support Team will also answer any questions about the College selection processes and deadlines.

Internal applications are comprised of a short CV of the proposed candidate, and title and short description of research proposal (ideally at max. 3000 characters).

Selected candidates from each College will have their applications considered by the institutional selection panel and applicants will be notified of the outcome of this process as soon as possible to allow maximum time to finalize their application.

Timelines

We begin the internal selection process as soon as we receive notification that a new AXA campaign has launched.

Applications submitted to internal demand management and quality management processes at the University of Glasgow are expected to comply with the University of Glasgow's Generative AI Guidance for Researchers and the Funders joint statement: use of generative AI tools in funding applications and assessment. 

All applicants should review these documents and are responsible for ensuring any application they submit complies with the guidance and parameters provided. Key points we would like to highlight from these resources include:

• Any use of generative AI tools must be accompanied by critical analysis and oversight on the part of the user
• Work that is not your own effort or is without appropriately transparent acknowledgement of sources or tools used (e.g. work submitted that is the product of Generative AI) does not meet crucial requirements for assessment or academic/research integrity
• Applicants must not use generative AI tools to generate an entire application, or sections of an application, without human involvement
• Reviewers must not input our confidential funding applications into generative AI tools to develop their reviews
