Research Data Management and Open Access Training

We offer an introductory training course in best practice in research data management and in data management planning for staff and for postgraduate researchers (PGRs). This training is delivered through Moodle and Zoom. Information on how to join can be found below.

Postgraduate taught students (PGTs) or undergraduates who are interested in learning more about data management are welcome to complete the Introduction to Research Data Management course, but should first read our advice on data management for PGTs and undergraduate students.

Our course materials are available for re-use. Offline versions of our course materials are available through EdShare, and are licenced with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC-BY) licence.

In addition to the training outlined below, we also offer bespoke training for any staff or student group on request.

Courses for PGRs

Introduction to Research Data Management (PGR)

RSDC 6037

Moodle course (approx 1 hour).

This course is mandatory for first year postgraduate researchers in MVLS and CoSE and strongly recommended for PGRs in the College of Arts and College of Social Sciences.

When data are created as part of academic research, they should be carefully stored, managed and, wherever possible, shared.

Through this online course students will learn about data management in an accessible way that they can apply to their own work. Topics include compliance with the University's and funders' policies; managing and storing data safely; and what should happen to your data when you graduate.

The session will be illustrated with real-life examples of good research data practices. This course will also help researchers to prepare their data management plans, which are now a mandatory component of the first Annual Progress Review.

This course is suitable for any research students who are collecting data or gathering findings, regardless of their subject area or approach.

You can enrol on the course in Moodle.

Writing a Data Management Plan with DMPOnline (PGR)

RSDC 6030

Delivered by the Research Information Management Team via webinar (1 hour).

The University and most funding bodies now require researchers who collect data of some sort as part of their work to write a Data Management Plan (DMP). Plans typically state what data will be created and how, and outline the plans for sharing and preservation, noting what is appropriate given the nature of the data and any restrictions that may need to be applied. We recommend that researchers use DMPonline, a flexible web-based tool, to create DMPs. The course will provide guidance on using DMPonline and an introduction to data management planning.

This course is intended for researchers who are at a stage of their projects where they are ready to produce a Data Management Plan. It is recommended that researchers first complete the online Introduction to Research Data Management course (RSDC 6037).

You can book a place on this course through MyCampus.
