CIVIS Educational Networking Event

Published: 11 January 2022

Report from the first of these events, organised by the University of Glasgow

The first CIVIS Educational Networking Event on 29 October 2021 organised by The University of Glasgow was a success, and we would like to thank all the colleagues who participated in the event.

Academics from across the nine European institutions of the CIVIS Alliance came together online to connect, discuss and reflect on four areas of joint interest: Innovative Pedagogies, Teacher Education, Higher Education Policy and Internationalisation and Sustainability.

This seminal session highlighted many potential areas for future collaboration, namely:

Pedagogies:

  • Research-based collaborations (joint proposals; projects):
    • Innovative/ meaningful teaching/ learning for citizen engagement about sustainability/ climate change
    • Language development difficulties in the early years: assessment and intervention
    • Learning motivation and the use of adaptive educational environments
    • Inclusion and Equity in education - Barriers and facilitators to teaching/ learning for all learners, student voice
  • Knowledge and innovative teaching strategies in different disciplines in higher education - medicine education

Higher Education Policy and Internationalisation:

COIL or Virtual Mobilities built into joint degrees or as short experiences to provide sustainable means of creating study abroad opportunities.

Digital and innovative pedagogies that encourage widening participation.

Economics of Higher Education.

Teacher Education:

  • Student mobilities in teacher education, i.e. developing a shared understanding of what students do in another context internationally, challenging the perception that mobility is only additive, rather than of equal weight and standing; sharing creative ways of integrating mobility into professional degrees where the practicum is an essential component, and understanding challenges presented by variation in degree structure and regulatory requirements of a given policy environment.
  • Masters level study in teacher education,e. exploring how Masters-level study forms an aspect of initial teacher education in different European contexts and how such advanced study can be integrated into the structure of degree programmes effectively.
  • Understanding the professional development of qualified teachers beyond the ‘ITE’ phase,e. understanding variations in performativity and accountability across European education systems and the extent to which teachers have agency in their work.
  • Exploring the professional development of teacher educators themselves.e. sharing ways in which different policy contexts prepare their teacher educators and how continuing professional development might best be facilitated for teacher educators; exploring how different stakeholders within teacher education can form reflective communities of practice.
  • Scoping a co-created and jointly delivered ‘International Masters’ in teacher education,e. exploring how it might prepare teachers for the ‘International Schools’ sector, or for national contexts in which a more formalised approach to initial teacher education is not in operation.

What next?

A follow-up meeting will take place on 4 February 2022 to form small working groups to develop collaborative projects within the CIVIS framework and Horizon Europe.

We would like to extend the invitation to colleagues interested in education from the University of Glasgow to join our CIVIS community network. Interested?
