Our submission to the Research Excellence Framework 2021 has been entered

We are very pleased to inform you that the University has now completed its REF2021 submission.

REF – the Research Excellence Framework, the research impact evaluation of UK higher education institutions – is hugely important to the University in terms of both funding and our international reputation.

Over 400 professional services colleagues are involved in pulling together the submission, working across colleges and University Services. We have submitted 28 units of assessment, comprising 1,445 research staff, 118 impact case studies, unit-level research environment statements and data, and 3,300 scholarly outputs.

The submission represents incredibly hard work on the part of all our research staff and those that support research and impact activities in any way. Contributing to and preparing the REF return is an enormous amount of work, particularly considering the challenging circumstances of the past year. The University’s submission would not have been possible without dedication and hard work and we are very grateful for the efforts of all staff contributing, whether directly or indirectly.

The University will be conducting a ‘lessons learned’ review in the coming months to reflect on those aspects of the process that worked well, and what we can improve in future. The REF2021 results will be released in April 2022.
