SPS former student commended by the Global Undergraduate Awards

FRaduate Kaisa Saarinen, has been Highly Commended by The Global Undergraduate Awards (UA) in the Politics and International Relations category for her entry "Hungary at the heart of a European identity crisis: the conflict of 'liberal' and 'realist' views on coordinating asylum policy and burden-sharing".

The Global Undergraduate Awards, established in 2008, is the world’s largest academic awards programme, with over 100 affiliated higher education institutions, and identifies leading creative thinkers and problem-solvers through their undergraduate coursework. As a champion of talented undergraduates, the UA provides top performing students with the support, network, and opportunities they need to raise their profiles and further their career paths.

All submissions are judged anonymously by an international panel of over 400 academics from some of the world’s leading institutions. This year, UA received a total of 3,437 submissions and Kaisa is recognised as being in the top 10% of these entrants.

Kaisa is from Finland and graduated in June of this year with a 1st class Hons in Politics. After spending a year abroad in her 3rd year at the University of Tokyo, her passion for East Asia will continue as next month she begins a postgraduate course in Area Studies, focusing on Japan, at St Antony's College, University of Oxford.

Reflecting on her time at the School, Kaisa said: "I was able to steer myself towards area studies by taking Chinese language & politics, and Central & East European Studies as secondary subjects, and the essay I submitted for the awards was written for one of my CEES courses. My study in this field offered, and will continue to offer, endless opportunities for researching real issues with interdisciplinary methods and methodologies."
