The Recording of Teaching Policy has been revised for 2026-27. The opt-out approach to lecture capture is unchanged and continues to work well with over 90% of lectures in equipped rooms now scheduled for recording. Colleagues continue to be able to opt-out as part of the timetabling process.
Clearer protection for your teaching
The policy now explicitly states that recordings, transcripts, captions, summaries and extracts must not be uploaded to third-party AI tools unless permitted within course guidance and compliant with University guidance on approved AI services. The definition of "recording" now covers any device or service that captures live speech, generates transcripts or summaries, or transmits audio or video to an external service, including wearables such as smart glasses. Covert recording is prohibited, and student recordings are for personal study use only.
Teaching-related one-to-one and small-group meetings (e.g., supervision meetings, feedback meetings, office hours and academic advising) are now named explicitly within scope. As with tutorials, seminars, workshops and practicals, they sit outside the opt-out approach and may only be recorded with your express permission.
Highlighting the benefits of recordings for inclusion
The policy now names student groups that recordings particularly help support through flexible access, including disabled students, neurodivergent students, commuter students, students with caring responsibilities or in paid employment, and students from widening participation backgrounds. Download access is enabled by default for recordings made through the central service, so that students with limited data or poor connectivity at home can download whilst on campus. Lecturers who prefer streaming-only access retain the right to opt out.
One source, not two
Previously, there was a separate regulation which set out the rules governing students recording teaching on their own devices where an official recording was not available, including the requirement to seek the lecturer's consent. Student recordings are now covered in full, and in more detail, within Section 6 of the policy. The separate regulation has therefore been withdrawn, and staff and students can rely on a single, current source.
