Part of Refugee Festival Scotland 2025, this interactive workshop invites children (ages 8-11) and their families to explore identity and connection through conversation and creativity. We will begin with a fun body warm-up, followed by an engaging activity where children will pair up with another family to learn about the family including languages spoken at home, family dynamics, and personal experiences.
Next, children will form small groups to discuss the differences and similarities they discovered and translate these insights into a collaborative art piece. Meanwhile, parents will also engage in meaningful discussions, sharing their experiences at home with other families in small groups and creating a collective flyer reflecting their learning.
Guided leading questions will help to start discussion, ensuring an enriching experience. This workshop fosters empathy, cultural awareness, and creativity, offering families a space to celebrate diversity and build connections in a supportive and fun environment.
The workshop will be led by Dr Dilara Özel and Dr Tawona Sitholé from the UNESCO Chair on Refugee Integration through Education, Language and Arts at the University of Glasgow. For more information about them and the project, please visit the UNESCO RIELA website.
