This academic event will explore the interconnections between public health, social sciences, and education research as they relate to strategies of overcoming inequalities in childhood and adolescence. While both disciplines refer to the negative impact of poverty on the lives of children, families and individuals, there is often a disciplinary disconnect within these discussions with few opportunities to explore these issues from an interdisciplinary lens.

The title “bridging gaps” serves two purposes.

First, as a nod to the “poverty-related attainment gap” as discussed in educational policy and literature- that where you live has an impact on overall academic performance. A similar body of knowledge exists in public health, with discussion of the social determinants of health highlighting the disparity that exists between the most and least affluent in society.

Second, to address the interdisciplinary “gap” between public health, social sciences, and educational researchers who are often focused on the same geographic areas, schools, or settings but are unaware of the wider ongoing research. Strengthening these links and creating more interdisciplinary discussions regarding the issues of inequality as they impact young people will lead to more nuanced understanding of the challenges and potential solutions.

It is our belief that this event will be the first of an ongoing conversation among likeminded researchers and academics who share common interests across disciplines.

The event will showcase up to four research projects that explore the topic of inequalities in health and education. Selected speakers will have the opportunity to speak for 15 minutes on their research area, including well established projects and also those currently underway. Research can include educational and health inequalities from a UK standpoint, as well as considering these challenges from an international perspective.

If you are interested in presenting your work to a supportive audience, please email Joanne.Neary@glasgow.ac.uk with 150 words describing your area of research.
